Overview

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Physical Therapist Assistant is responsible for the provision of direct and indirect physical therapy services to the children and young adults residing at St. Mary’s Home and the Albero House. She/he will function as an active member of the trans-disciplinary team, in planning and implementing a comprehensive therapeutic program to be carried out during activities in the classroom and on the Living Units. The physical therapist assistant shall be under the supervision of the PTA Supervisor / Physical Therapist.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

Direct Care

  • Assist the physical therapist with the development and implementation of therapy and positioning programs for each child on the PTA’s caseload
  • Participate in the trans-disciplinary program through direct care and consult with staff regarding child’s physical therapy goals and positioning program.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary annual and quarterly individual support plan (ISP) meetings, more often if needed
  • Consult with OT regarding bed positioning for child upon admission.                        
  • Participate in and provide appropriate referrals, information and evaluations for orthopedic rounds, physiatry rounds, Botox injections, and wheelchair clinic with children on current caseload. Also, confer with other medical personnel as necessary.
  • Provide all appropriate care for each child on caseload with PT’s supervision.

 

Indirect Care

  • Maintain and update therapy equipment and distribute as necessary.
  • Provide staff in-servicing; i.e. lifting, positioning, ROM, on a one-on-one and/or group basis.
  • Document therapy services as indicated by St. Mary’s guidelines (per APTA and Medicaid).
  • Participate in maintaining an orderly and safe physical therapy department space.
  • Supervise PT aides according to APTA guidelines.
  • Supervise PT volunteers and provide appropriate learning experiences.
  • Participate in student affiliations for local and out of state schools for PTA and PT students.       Supervise students as recommended by affiliating schools’ guidelines.
  • Attend and participate in pre-admission meetings, unit meetings, annual and quarterly ISP meetings, IDT meetings and additional meetings as required.
  • Attend continuing educational courses specific to PT and/or special needs children per APTA continuing educational requirements. SMHDC finances two (2) courses per year for full time PTA’s.       Continuing education for part time therapists is negotiable with administration.

 

 

Qualifications

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed by or have license pending from the Virginia State Board of Physical Medicine
  • Graduated from an accredited school of Physical Therapist Assistants.
  • Possess personal characteristics necessary for working with severely multi-handicapped children and young adults.
  • Possess communication skills necessary for interacting with other therapists, nursing personnel, teachers, and parents.
  • Exhibit the good physical health necessary to carry out daily therapy programs for severely physically disabled children, including the ability to lift and transport non-ambulatory children and young adults.
