The Director of Nursing (DON) reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. Supporting a person centered model of care, the DON is responsible for the day-to-day operational processes, staffing, and organization of the Nursing Department. Incumbent supervises all Registered Nurses, and Licensed Practical Nurses, and insures their compliance with the nursing policies and the standards of practice expected from our nurses. Responsible for 24/7 staffing; interviewing and hiring; coordinating training needs based on performance and experience, and maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations governing clinical programs provided in a long term care facility. 1. Creates and implements the nursing department’s strategic plans to meet the Home’s objectives and mission statement, and to insure that staff maintain competencies required by the individuals serve here.
2. Insures regulatory (Medicaid and the Department of Behavior and Development Services) compliance and establishes and adheres to budgetary requirements for the Nursing Department
3. Responsible for quality management of care of residents
4. Establishes and monitors FTE needs of the nursing department
5. Reconciles timecards and processes payroll for the nursing department
6. Implements facility guidelines, policies, and procedures, and is responsible for staff compliance
7. Responsible for making sure that the 90-day performance evaluation and the annual performance evaluation of nursing personnel are completed on a timely basis.
8. Initiate and update nurse employee file
9. Participates in pre-admission assessment adhering to admission criteria, and facilitates nursing discharge procedures
10. Completes CHAMPUS recertification forms
11. Coordinates administrative nursing issues with other departments and Norfolk Public Schools’ programs
12. Assigns responsibilities for infection control and coordinates infection control practices, recommendations, and training
13. Act as the primary liaison between St. Mary’s Nursing Department and CHKD, Portsmouth Naval Hospital and St. Mary’s physicians on nursing and medical issues
14. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the Federal and State regulations that apply to the Home’s operations and the Nursing Department specifically.
15. Participates in all employment decisions affecting the Nursing Department from hiring decisions and promotion decisions up to initiating corrective actions leading up to possible termination of staff.
16. Is a participating member of several of the Home's regularly meeting committees, including but not limited to the Safety Committee, the Quality Improvement Committee, the Infection Control Committee, etc., and represents the Home's nursing department at the Board of Trustees meetings throughout the year.
16. Other duties as assigned; works a flexible schedule including working as a floor nurse or working a different shift (infrequently) in order to monitor nursing performance.
Education/licensure: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program; has a current Virginia RN license; masters in nursing management preferred
Skills: Demonstrates strong leadership qualities and characteristics; effective communication
strong organizational skills; able to perform a thorough pediatric nursing assessment
Experience: Minimum of 5 years med-surgical or pediatric experience, and 2 years nursing management/supervisory experience required; long-term care experience preferred.
